Travelling between Chennai and Bangalore is set to get smoother with the expansion of National Highway 40. The Indian government has allocated Rs 1,338 crore to widen a crucial 28-kilometre stretch from Walajapet to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border near Chittoor. This development aims to reduce congestion, improve safety, and cut down Chennai to Bangalore travel time significantly. The new four-lane highway is expected to strengthen links between major cities, benefiting daily commuters, tourists, and businesses.
The Bangalore to Chennai distance, approximately 330 km, currently takes around six to seven hours by road, depending on traffic conditions. With the expansion of National Highway 40, this travel duration is likely to decrease, making road trips more efficient and hassle-free.
One of the key features of this project is the 10-kilometre bypass around Walajapet and Ranipet, designed to decongest traffic in these busy towns. Additionally, the upgraded stretch will include four major bridges and two railway over-bridges, ensuring safer and smoother travel.
The improved connectivity will not only benefit daily commuters but also enhance trade and tourism between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Chennai and Bangalore are two of India's biggest economic hubs, with industries spanning IT, manufacturing, and automobiles. Faster movement of goods and people will help businesses thrive, reducing transport delays and fuel costs.
Tourism is also set to receive a boost. Cities along the route, such as Tirupati, Vellore, and Ranipet, attract thousands of visitors every year. The famous Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore, a top medical institution, will now be more accessible, easing travel for patients, doctors, and medical staff.
Poor road conditions and congestion have long been concerns on this stretch. With National Highway 40 undergoing expansion, travellers can expect wider roads, better traffic management, and safer driving conditions. The presence of service roads will also prevent unnecessary traffic jams, offering a smoother travel experience for both commercial and personal vehicles.
The expansion of National Highway 40 is a major step toward reducing Bangalore to Chennai travel time and improving overall connectivity. Whether for business, tourism, or daily commuting, the new four-lane stretch will make journeys quicker, safer, and more comfortable. The upgraded infrastructure will not only ease congestion but also boost economic growth in the region. With enhanced roads and better traffic management, Bangalore to Chennai road trips will soon be more convenient than ever.
